Jason White wins the opening sprint at the Tour Series and leads the team to 7th place
East Midlands based cycling team www.cyclingbargains.com - Infinis Metaltek Racing Team proved they could mix it with the top riders in the UK at the opening round of the Tour Series in Milton Keynes on Thursday night. The televised race was the first of ten races with riders invited to complete from ten of the UK's top teams. The race can be seen on Friday 22nd May on ITV4 at 7pm.
Many of the teams were able to field Olympic, Commonwealth, World and National Champions from a number of cycling disciplines. Star riders who took to the start line on Thursday night included National Circuit Race Champion Dean Downing; ex Tour de France rider and Milk Race winner Malcolm Elliot; Commonwealth Games medal winner Tony Gibb; Olympic medallists Rob Hayles and Ed Clancy.
www.cyclingbargains.com - Infinis Metaltek Team Manager, Rod Freeman selected Jason White from Essex, who is returning to elite cycle racing after a four year break; Daniel Booth, the ex National under 23 Cyclo Cross Champion; British Cycling's Premier Calendar rider Raphael Deinhart and newcomers to the sport Will Fox and Matthew Fostun to fly the team colours. The team were eagerly urged on by its main sponsors; Heather Freeman, Director of www.cyclingbargains.com who retail cycle parts and accessories; Alan Lovell, Chief Executive of Infinis Ltd, who are a renewable energy company based in Northampton; and Andy Swain, owner of Metaltek Engineering Solutions.
Rod Freeman said "It was great to have the full support of our main sponsors at start of the UK's highest profile race series and a fantastic opportunity to show their brands to the people of Milton Keynes and on ITV."
Jason White said before the race: I am determined to do well tonight and nothing less than a top ten will do! Matt Fostun said after the race: I wasn't sure what this style of team racing would be like, but it certainly took my breath away. It was great to be riding in front of such crowds and against such high profile riders. Daniel Booth said afterwards "There were a few crashes out there with one or two riders hitting the tarmac, but thankfully the team all got round safely! Will Fox commented "I can't wait for the next round at Exeter. I know what I need to do now to get a higher place and I am really looking forward to progressing as the race series continues." Raphael Deinhart said "There were a lot of very fast riders in this event. The organisers have brought together some the leading talent in cycling and produced an absolute showcase."
The race lasted just over an hour and the rules required the highest placed three riders from each team to count towards the competition. There were three hot spot sprints during the race. The first hot spot sprint was secured by Jason White after his strong sprint left his competitors just watching, but White also went on to gain 7th place in the final dash for the chequered flag, with teams mates Will Fox (22nd) and Raphael Deinhart (29th) completing the teams three riders to give the team 7th place overall
